Sunrise is the moment the top of the Sun appears on the horizon.

It marks the start of the Sun's path for the day. Even though the Sun looks like it moves, it stays still. The Earth is actually turning. This turn creates the illusion of a rising Sun.

Before the Sun is seen, the sky gets bright. We call this time twilight. The very first part of this is called astronomical dawn. The sky often turns bright red or orange during this time. This happens because of how light moves through the air. Air molecules and tiny particles scatter the light. Blue and green colors scatter away easily. This leaves the long red and orange colors for us to see.

Sometimes, we see a false sunrise. This happens because the air bends the light. This can make the Sun look like it is there when it is still below the horizon.

The time of sunrise changes all year. It depends on where you live and the tilt of the Earth.
