Sunrise is the moment the top edge of the Sun appears on the horizon.

This event marks the start of the Sun's path for the day. Many people use the word to describe the whole process of the Sun crossing the horizon. Before the Sun is visible, the sky begins to brighten during a time called twilight. The very first part of this brightening is called astronomical dawn. As the Sun rises, we often see beautiful colors in the sky.

These colors can change based on the atmosphere and clouds.

It might look like the Sun is moving upward, but it is actually an illusion. The Sun stays in place while the Earth rotates. This happens because we are observing from a rotating frame of reference. In the 16th century, Nicolaus Copernicus changed how we think about this. He created the heliocentric model, which shows the Sun at the center. Before him, many cultures used the geocentric model. This older idea suggested the Earth was the center of everything.

Architect Buckminster Fuller even suggested new terms like "sunsight" to better describe this movement.

Light travels through the atmosphere to reach our eyes. This journey causes the colors we see during sunrise. Air molecules and tiny particles scatter the sunlight. This is called Rayleigh scattering. Blue and green light colors scatter away easily. This leaves the longer red and orange colors to reach us.

Larger particles like cloud droplets cause Mie scattering. This helps light up the horizon with bright colors. Sometimes, volcanic ash can make these colors look different. Eruptions from Mount Pinatubo in 1991 or Krakatoa in 1883 created special glows in the sky.

The exact time of sunrise changes throughout the year. It depends on your latitude, longitude, and altitude. The Earth's tilt and its path around the Sun cause these changes. In the spring, sunrise happens earlier each day. It reaches its earliest time near the summer solstice. Later, the time gets later until the winter solstice.

You can use a tool called an analemma to predict these times. Near the poles, the Sun rises very slowly because it crosses the horizon at a shallow angle.

Sometimes, the atmosphere plays tricks on our eyes. This can create a "false sunrise." This happens because the Earth's atmosphere refracts, or bends, the light. This bending makes the Sun appear above the horizon even when it is still below it.

This can make the Sun look wider than it is tall. You might also see a tiny green flash for a second or two. These moments show how much the air around our planet affects what we see. The sky is always working to change the light we receive.
