Dawn

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Dawn is the beautiful time when the world begins to wake up. It is the period of morning twilight that happens before the sun rises. You might think of it as the start of the day. This happens because sunlight starts to scatter through the Earth's atmosphere. This light becomes visible when the center of the sun is 18 degrees below your horizon.

This special time lasts until the sun's upper edge breaks the horizon. Once the sun appears, the bright direct light outshines the soft, scattered light. The word dawn comes from an Old English verb that means "to become day."

Scientists divide this morning light into three distinct stages. The first stage is called astronomical dawn. This begins when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. At this point, the sky is very dark and the stars might still look bright.

The next stage is nautical dawn, which starts when the sun reaches 12 degrees below the horizon. During this time, sailors can finally see the horizon line at sea. The final stage is civil dawn, which begins when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon.

This is when there is enough light to start outdoor activities. The sky might look blue, or it might turn orange and yellow if there are clouds.

How long dawn lasts depends on where you are standing on Earth. At the Equator, the twilight period is very short. It lasts only a little over 70 minutes from the start of astronomical dawn until sunrise.

During the equinox at the Equator, each stage of twilight lasts just 24 minutes. However, near the North and South Poles, dawn can last for many hours. In the polar regions, the sun might not set at all during the summer solstice. This makes the period of twilight much longer than in other parts of the world.

Different cultures have many special ways to talk about the dawn. In Islam, astronomical dawn is called "True Dawn" and marks the time for the first prayer. Some people also recognize a "False Dawn" called Zodiacal Light. In Hindu traditions, the goddess Ushas is the deity of the dawn.

There is also a special time called brahmamuhurta, which is an ideal time for meditation. In the Bible, dawn is used as a symbol for Jesus. Even in ancient stories, the Greek poet Homer called the dawn "rosy-fingered."

Dawn connects the science of our planet to the stories we tell. It shows us how the angle of the sun changes our daily lives. You can see this when you look at bright planets like Venus or Jupiter in the sky. These planets are often still visible to your eyes during civil dawn. Whether you are a sailor looking for the horizon or a student watching a sunrise, dawn is a constant part of life. It is a bridge between the deep dark of night and the bright light of day.
