This beautiful sight is called the Belt of Venus. It is also known as Venus's Girdle or the antitwilight arch. You can find it during civil twilight. This happens shortly before the sun rises or after it sets. The pink glow sits about 10 to 20 degrees above the horizon. It looks like a soft band of light surrounding you.

This glow works through a way called Rayleigh scattering. The sun shines light toward the Earth's atmosphere. This light hits tiny bits in the air called particulates. These small bits scatter the light back toward your eyes. This process is known as backscattering. The light becomes reddened as it travels. This creates the rosy color we see in the sky. It is very similar to the alpenglow seen on mountains.

As the sun moves further away, the sky changes. A dark band will appear below the pink arch. This dark area is the shadow of the Earth. Scientists call this the twilight wedge. The pink Belt of Venus stays above this dark band. It stays visible for a while after the sun goes down. This happens because the particulates scatter light high in the air. The arch stays separated from the dark horizon.

The name comes from a story about the past. It refers to a girdle or a belt. This belt belonged to the Greek goddess Aphrodite. People also call her the Roman goddess Venus. Even though it has her name, the planet Venus is not there. The planet never appears in the Belt of Venus. This is because the planet stays too close to the sun. It can only get 45 to 48 degrees away from the sun.

You might notice the color changes with the seasons. The pink glow looks much brighter during the winter months. This is because cold air has less absolute humidity. This means there is less water in the air. The air stays clearer and more stable in the cold. In the summer, the glow looks much more faded. It might look dim above a yellowish-orange band. You can also see similar light during a blood moon.
