Gegenschein

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Have you ever looked at the night sky and seen a tiny glow? This soft light is called the gegenschein. It is a faint, bright spot in the dark sky. You can find it at the antisolar point. This means it is directly opposite the Sun.

It looks like a small, oval shape. This shape is about 8 to 10 degrees wide. It sits within the dimmer band of zodiacal light. This light is part of the zodiacal light band. It is a very special sight for stargazers.

How does this light happen in space? It works through a thing called backscatter. Tiny bits of interplanetary dust float around the Sun. Most of this dust orbits near the ecliptic plane. Scientists think the asteroid belt causes most of this effect. Sunlight hits these small dust particles. The light bounces back at a high angle toward us. This makes the dust look like it is at full phase. Because of this, the spot looks slightly brighter than the rest of the band.

People have tried to study this glow for many years. For a long time, people thought Esprit Pézenas described it in 1730. He was a French Jesuit astronomer. However, a professor named Donald Olson found a different story in 2021. He believes Theodor Brorsen was actually the first to describe it. Brorsen was a Danish astronomer who did this in 1854. Pézenas might have seen a red auroral event instead. Brorsen published the first deep studies of the gegenschein in that same year.

Many other people found the light later on. T. W. Backhouse discovered it in 1876. Edward Emerson Barnard also found it in 1882. The light has a magnitude of +5 to +6. It has a very low surface brightness. This brightness is in the +10 to +12 magnitude range. An old theory said dust gathered at the L2 point. This is a spot in the Earth-Sun system. But scientists proved this wrong in 1970. They saw no shadow at the antisolar point.

Learning about the gegenschein helps us understand our solar system. It shows us that space is not empty. It is filled with tiny bits of dust from places like the asteroid belt. You can think of it like light hitting a dusty road. It is hard to see the gegenschein today. Most people live in places with light pollution. This is light from cities that makes the sky too bright. To see it, you need a very dark place.
