Dusk

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Dusk is a special time of day. It is the darkest part of evening twilight. Twilight is the light left in the sky after the Sun sets. Dusk happens just before the night begins. It is the moment when the sky reaches its lowest brightness. This transition is important for seeing the stars.

There are three stages of dusk. First is civil dusk. This starts at sunset. The Sun moves 6 degrees below the horizon. The sky often shows orange and red colors. You might see some stars or planets then. Next is nautical dusk. This starts when the Sun reaches 12 degrees below the horizon. Objects are harder to see now.

The final stage is astronomical dusk. This begins at nautical dusk. It ends when the Sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. At this point, the Sun no longer lights the sky. This helps people look at the stars without light interference. This stage marks the end of astronomical twilight.

Many things change how dusk looks. The timing depends on your location and the season. In summer, dusk can last a long time at higher latitudes. This happens because the Sun moves at a shallow angle. In tropical places like the Philippines, dusk is much shorter. This is due to the Sun's steep path.

Weather and place also matter. Dust, humidity, and pollution can make colors look vivid. You might see bright reds, oranges, or purples. Cities can look bright because of artificial light. However, rural or coastal areas often have clearer skies. This makes it easier to see stars during the late stages of twilight.
