Darkness

Darkness is what happens when there is no visible light.

It is more than just a lack of brightness. In science, an object is dark if it absorbs photons. Photons are tiny particles that make up light. For example, matte black paint absorbs much light. This makes it look dim compared to white paint. White paint reflects most of the light that hits it.

Some things might even look dark but are actually bright. They might be bright at a frequency humans cannot see.

Our eyes have a special way of working in the dark. This is called scotopic vision. When light levels drop, our eyes stop seeing color. This happens because our cone cells stop working. Cone cells are the parts of the eye that see color. They are not as sensitive to light as rod cells. Rod cells help us see when it is dim. To help us see, our pupils dilate. This means the black center of the eye grows larger. This lets more light enter the eye to help us see.

People have studied darkness for a very long time. Scientists use the Bortle scale to measure the night sky. This scale shows how bright the stars look in one place. In the United Kingdom, a company called Surrey NanoSystems made something amazing. They developed a material called Vantablack. The name comes from vertically aligned nanotube arrays. It is one of the darkest things known. It can absorb up to 99.965% of visible light.

Artists and writers also use darkness in their work. Painters use shadows to add depth to a picture. They use darkness to create contrast with light. This can draw your eye to certain parts of a painting. In stories, darkness can feel heavy or sad. Writers often use it to show feelings of fear. In many cultures, darkness is a metaphor for unhappiness. It can even represent things that are unknown or mysterious.

Darkness also has big meanings in religion and history. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, darkness was part of the first creation. The Bible says darkness was over the surface of the deep. In Islam, the Quran mentions both darkness and light. Both are seen as parts of God's will. Ancient Greeks even had a god named Erebus. He was a personification of darkness. He was linked to the shadowy underworld. These stories show how much humans wonder about the dark.
