Photometry (optics)

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Have you ever wondered how we measure brightness? Scientists use a field called photometry to study light. It is a branch of optics that focuses on how light looks to humans. It does not just count the total energy of light. Instead, it measures how much light is emitted, reflected, or received. This is important because our eyes see the world in a special way.

Photometry helps us understand the light we can actually perceive.

This science works by using a special weighting system. Our eyes are not equally sensitive to every color. For example, the human eye sees green light very well. It does not see red light as clearly. Photometry accounts for this by using a luminosity function. This function gives more weight to wavelengths our eyes see best. We often use the photopic response, which is how we see in bright light.

This way, measurements match our actual experience of brightness.

People have studied the effects of light for a long time. Scientists began measuring electromagnetic radiation at the end of the 18th century. They used different methods depending on what they were studying. For example, they used thermometers to measure the heating effect of infrared light. This led to the creation of radiometric units. Later, they used the human eye as a detector. This gave rise to photometric units that match our vision.

There are many different units used in this field. A watt is a unit of radiant flux, which is total power. A lumen is a unit of luminous flux, which is visible light. A 60 watt incandescent bulb might provide about 900 lumens. A 15 watt compact fluorescent lamp can also provide 900 lumens. The lumen is a color-blind unit, meaning it only shows total brightness. One watt of pure green light at 555 nanometres is worth 683 lumens.

To measure light, scientists use tools called photodetectors. These devices create an electric signal when light hits them. Simple tools can turn lights on or off based on the room. More complex tools are used in the lighting industry. A spherical photometer uses a large globe to measure light from all sides. Other tools, like goniophotometers, use rotating tables to test lamps. These measurements help experts design the perfect lighting for our homes and offices.
