How bright is a light?

Scientists use a study called photometry to measure light. They do not just measure power. They measure how bright light looks to the human eye.

Our eyes do not see all colors the same way. We see green light very well. We see red light much less clearly. Because of this, photometry uses a special way to weight light. It gives more value to colors our eyes see well.

This helps us understand how we see the world.

There are two ways to talk about light. One way is called radiometry. It measures the total power of light. The other way is photometry. It measures the light we can actually see.

We use different units for these. A watt measures power. A lumen measures luminous flux, which is the amount of light given off. For example, a space heater uses many watts of power. But it gives off very little light. A light bulb might use 60 watts of power. It can still give off 900 lumens of light. This tells us how much light is in the room.
