Luminance

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Luminance is a way to measure light from a surface. It tells us how much light comes out of or bounces off an area. This measurement is very important for understanding how bright things appear. Scientists use luminance to study how light travels in a specific direction. It is different from just seeing light. It is a precise way to describe light intensity per unit area.

To understand how it works, think about how your eyes see. Luminance shows how much light your eye can detect from a certain angle. This happens when light passes through your pupil. The measurement depends on the amount of light and the angle of view. If a surface is flat and even, we call it a diffuse surface. In these cases, the luminance tells us exactly how bright that surface will look to you.

Different groups have created rules for these measurements over time. The CIE and the ISO help standardize how we convert light data. These groups make sure scientists use the same methods everywhere. One older system used a unit called the stilb. The stilb is equal to 10,000 candela per square metre. Today, most people use the SI unit called candela per square metre.

There are many different levels of luminance in our world. A typical computer display emits a certain amount of light. The sun is much more powerful than a screen. At noon, the sun has a luminance of about 1,600,000,000 cd/m2. Because light can be so strong, we must be careful. High luminance can cause heat damage to the retina in your eye.

We use special tools to measure these light levels accurately. A luminance meter is a device used for this job. Some simple meters only measure light in one single direction. Other imaging meters work much like a digital camera. They can record luminance across a whole image. This helps experts in the video industry check how bright displays are.
