Illuminance

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Have you ever wondered how much light hits a surface? Scientists use a special word for this called illuminance.

Illuminance measures the total amount of light hitting a specific area. It is not just about how bright a light looks. It is a way to measure how much light actually lands on a thing. This helps us understand how much light is available to see with. It is different from luminance, which is how bright a surface looks to our eyes.

How does this measurement work? It looks at the light hitting a surface per unit of area. Scientists use a special way to weigh the light by its color. They use a luminosity function to match how humans see brightness. This makes the math match what our eyes actually feel.

There are also other ways light moves. Luminous emittance is the light that comes out from a surface. This is also called luminous exitance. These different terms help scientists describe light in many ways.

People have used different names for these measurements over time. In the past, people often just called this brightness. However, that word can be confusing for scientists. Now, they use specific units to be very clear. One system uses the unit called the phot. Another unit is the foot-candle, which is used in photography.

Most scientists today use the SI unit called the lux. You can also think of a lux as lumens per square metre.

Light levels can change by huge amounts in our world. Sunlight is very bright at 100,000 lux. You can read large text at 10^8 lux. That is 1,000 times brighter than direct sunlight! Such bright light can be very uncomfortable for your eyes. On the other hand, a full moon is much dimmer at 0.1 lux. Starlight is even lower at 0.001 lux.

Even an overcast night is very dark at 0.0001 lux.

We can see how illuminance connects to the stars too. Astronomers look at the light stars cast on the Earth's atmosphere. They use this to measure how bright a star appears. They often use something called apparent magnitudes for this. They can even turn these magnitudes into lux using a math formula.

This helps us understand the vast light of space. Our eyes are amazing because we can see a huge range of light. We can see things even in the tiniest amounts of starlight.
