Contrast (vision)

Contrast is the difference in light or color that makes things stand out. It helps us tell an object apart from its background.

Without this difference, everything would look the same. The maximum amount of contrast in an image is called the contrast ratio. This is also known as the dynamic range. If an image uses almost all its available contrast, it reaches a state of conservation. This means changing one part of the image affects the rest.

Changing the light in an image works like a seesaw. If you brighten an image, the dark areas gain more contrast. However, the bright areas lose contrast at the same time. Darkening an image does the opposite to the light and dark spots. There is also a method called bleach bypass. This process reduces contrast in the very brightest and darkest parts. Instead, it makes the middle brightness levels stand out more clearly. This shows how light and dark are always connected in an image.

Scientists have studied how our eyes sense these differences for a long time. In 1968, researchers Campbell and Robson studied how humans see contrast. They found that our eyes are best at seeing certain patterns. They used a "sweep grating" to test this idea. This is a pattern of bars that change in thickness and brightness.

Their work helped us understand the math behind our vision. They showed that our sensitivity peaks at a specific pattern size. This size is measured in cycles per degree, or cpd.

Our eyes have a limit to what they can see. The human eye can usually see details up to about 60 cpd. This limit is linked to how many light-sensing cells are in the retina. Our eyes are most sensitive to patterns between 2 and 5 cpd.

As people get older, this sensitivity often goes down. Certain health issues like glaucoma or cataracts can also make it harder. These conditions make it difficult to see things when the contrast is low. This might make driving at night a very hard job.

Contrast is different from visual acuity. Visual acuity is how well you can see small, sharp details. A person might pass an eye test with 20/20 vision. However, they may still struggle with daily tasks because of low contrast sensitivity. This is because acuity tests often use very high contrast, like black letters on white paper.

Contrast sensitivity tests use much lighter, paler colors. This helps doctors see how well a person can find objects in dim light. Understanding both helps us see the full picture of how eyes work.
