Contrast is the difference in light or color. It helps an object stand out from its background.

Without contrast, things might look the same as their surroundings.

When you change a picture, you must be careful. Making a picture brighter helps dark areas look clearer. However, this makes bright areas look less clear. This happens because there is a limit to the contrast available.

Our eyes have something called contrast sensitivity. This is our ability to see differences in light. Most people see best at a certain pattern size. We call this spatial frequency.

Our eyes are best at seeing patterns that are not too wide or too thin. This peak happens at about 2 to 5 cycles per degree. This is a way to measure how many patterns fit in a small space.

As people get older, this ability can go down. Some health issues can also make it harder to see contrast. This can make daily tasks like driving at night very hard.
