Brightness is how much light seems to shine from something.

It is a feeling in our eyes. We see how much light an object reflects or sends out.

Brightness is not the same as lightness. Lightness is how something looks next to a white object. Brightness is just about the light itself. The world around an object can change how bright it looks. This is called context.

In space, stars have different levels of brightness. Scientists use two ways to measure them. They use apparent magnitude. They also use absolute magnitude.

Sometimes, people use different words for light. On a light bulb box, brightness may mean luminous flux. This is the total amount of light from a source. Other times, it means luminance. This is the amount of light on a surface.

We use symbols to show brightness on screens. One symbol shows low brightness. Another symbol shows high brightness.
