Loudness is how we feel sound. It is a way to order sounds from quiet to loud.

This is different from sound strength. Sound strength is a physical measure. Loudness is how our ears and brains feel it.

Our ears hear different sounds in different ways. This depends on the frequency. Frequency is how high or low a sound is. Most people hear sounds best between 2 and 4 kHz. This is a middle range of sound.

Some people have hearing loss. This happens if the ear or brain is hurt. These people may not hear soft sounds. But loud sounds might still sound loud to them. One idea is called loudness recruitment. This means loudness grows very fast for them. Another idea is called softness imperception. This means their softest sounds are already quite loud.

TV shows use tools to help us. They use loudness normalization. This makes sure ads are not louder than shows. This helps us listen without big jumps in volume.
