Sound is made when things vibrate.

A vibration is a quick shake. This shake moves through a medium. A medium is any material like air, water, or metal.

Sound travels as a mechanical wave. This means it carries energy from one place to another. The particles in the material do not travel with the wave. They just move back and forth.

Sound moves at different speeds. It moves fast in steel. It moves slower in water. In air, it moves at about 343 meters per second. The speed changes with the temperature. Sound cannot move in space. This is because space has no medium to carry the waves.

We can study sound using science. This study is called acoustics.

People can hear many different sounds. Humans hear from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The Hz, or hertz, measures how often the shake happens. This is called frequency. Higher frequency sounds have a higher pitch. Lower frequency sounds have a lower pitch.
