Acoustic resonance

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Everything has a natural way it likes to shake. This is called resonance.

When a sound wave matches this natural shake, the object vibrates strongly. This is called acoustic resonance. An object can have many different resonance frequencies. It will shake easily at those notes. It will shake less at other notes. This helps the object pick out one sound from many.

Sometimes, the shaking is very strong. A sound can shake a wine glass until it breaks.

Instrument makers use resonance to make music. Strings on a guitar or violin use it. The length and tension of a string change its notes.

Air in a tube also uses resonance. A flute is an open pipe. A clarinet is a closed pipe. The shape and length of the tube change the sound.

Even our ears use this way to work. A part in the inner ear called the basilar membrane shakes. This helps us detect sounds. This is a very important part of hearing.
