A vessel flute is a special kind of instrument.

Most flutes are long tubes. Vessel flutes are different. They have round bodies like a bowl or a ball. The far end of the flute is closed. This shape makes the air inside move in a special way. The air moves in and out of the hole. This creates a unique sound. It can sound very smooth.

You can make a sound by blowing across a hole. This is just like blowing across an empty bottle. Some flutes use a fipple. A fipple is a small part that directs air. Others are edge-blown. This means the player uses their lips to move the air.

Many flutes have holes for your fingers. These holes let you play different notes. A small flute makes a high sound. A large flute makes a low sound. Some ocarinas have two or three rooms inside. We call these chambers. These chambers let the player play chords. A chord is when you play many notes at once. This helps the instrument play a wider range of music.
