You can make music by blowing air into an instrument. These are called woodwind instruments.

Even though they have this name, they are not always made of wood. Some are made of silver, gold, or brass. The saxophone is made of brass. But it is still a woodwind. This is because it uses a reed to make sound.

There are two main types of woodwinds. The first type is the flute. In an open flute, you blow air across a sharp edge. This makes the air inside vibrate. Some flutes are made of bamboo or tree branches. Modern flutes often use silver or gold. A closed flute is different. You blow air into a small channel. This channel leads the air to a sharp edge. The recorder is a closed flute.

The second type uses reeds. A reed is a small piece of cane. Some instruments use one reed. The clarinet is a single-reed instrument. Other instruments use two reeds. These are called double-reed instruments. The oboe and bassoon use two reeds. You might even see bagpipes. They use two or more reeds to play.
