Woodwind instruments are a special family of musical tools.

People use them to make many different sounds. You might know some common ones like the flute or clarinet. Others include the oboe, the bassoon, and the saxophone. These instruments are part of the larger wind instrument group. They are special because of how they make sound. This way of making sound is what defines them.

There are two main ways these instruments work. The first way is by using a flute style. In an open flute, you blow air across a sharp edge. This split air makes a column of air vibrate inside. Examples include the transverse flute and the panpipes. In a closed flute, you blow air into a small duct. This duct carries the air to a sharp edge. The recorder and the ocarina are closed flutes.

The second way uses a small piece of cane called a reed. Some instruments use just one reed attached to a mouthpiece. The clarinet and the saxophone are single-reed instruments. Other instruments use two small pieces of cane tied together. These are called double-reed instruments. The oboe, the cor anglais, and the bassoon use two reeds. You can also find double reeds in many shawms. Some players put the reed directly between their lips.

People have used these tools for a very long time. Double-reed instruments might have started in the Neolithic period. This was a long time ago in human history. Some people think they were inspired by wind in a split rush. Early flutes were often made from simple things like bamboo. They were also made from grasses or tree branches. Later, people used metals like tin, copper, or bronze. Modern concert flutes often use gold or silver alloys.

Today, you can hear these instruments in many places. A modern orchestra usually has flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons. They might also use a piccolo or a contrabassoon. Concert bands use even more types of woodwinds. They might include alto, tenor, or baritone saxophones. Some instruments even use "free reeds" like a harmonica. These use small metal tongues to make music.
