People who play the flute are called flautists or flutists. To make a sound, a player blows air across an opening. This air starts to shake or vibrate inside the tube. This vibration creates the music we hear. The player can change the pitch by opening and closing holes. This changes how long the air column is inside the instrument.

Other flutes are end-blown, meaning you blow into the top. The xiao is a famous end-blown flute from China. Some flutes use a special part called a fipple. This is a small duct that guides the air. The recorder and the tin whistle are types of fipple flutes. Most modern flutes are made of metal like silver or nickel.
