Key (music)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

In music, a key is like a home for notes. It helps a song feel steady and balanced.

A key has two main parts. First, it has a tonic pitch. This is the starting note. Most songs end on this note to feel finished. Second, a key has a mode. This is a pattern of notes. A major mode often sounds bright. A minor mode can sound different. Together, they give a song its mood.

Most notes in a key come from a scale. These are called diatonic pitches. Other notes are used less often. They are called chromatic pitches.

Musicians use a map called the Circle of Fifths. This circle shows how keys relate. It shows which keys share many notes. It also shows relative minors. These are keys that use the same notes but have a different tonic. Some instruments, like the trumpet, are called transposing instruments. This means they play notes differently than they are written. This helps the music sound right for that instrument.
