A scale is a set of musical notes. A minor scale sounds different than a major scale.

One common example is the A minor scale. You can play it using only white keys on a piano.

There are three main types of minor scales. The first is the natural minor scale. It is also called the Aeolian mode.

The second type is the harmonic minor scale. People use this in classical music. For example, Mozart used it in his piano works. It also appears in spiritual songs like "Go Down Moses." Some guitar players use it to make heavy metal music.

The third type is the melodic minor scale. This scale changes as you play it. When you play it up, it sounds like a major scale. When you play it down, it changes back. Some people call this the "jazz minor scale." Elton John used it in one of his songs.

Other scales can also be minor. These include the Dorian and Phrygian modes. Scales with only five notes, called pentatonic scales, can also sound minor. All these scales help people make many kinds of music.
