A major scale is a set of musical notes.

It is a very common tool in Western music. Most major scales use seven notes. The eighth note is a repeat of the first. It sounds much higher. This is called an octave.

One famous scale is C major. It is easy to write. You play it using only the white keys on a piano. Other scales use sharps or flats. These are notes that fall between the main keys.

Scales follow a special pattern of steps. These are whole steps and half steps. A major scale uses a specific order of these steps. You can think of it as two identical parts. Each part has two whole steps and one half step.

Different cultures use these sounds too. In Carnatic music, it is called Sankarabharanam. In Hindustani music, it is called Bilaval. There are also other types of scales. These include the Lydian and Mixolydian modes. Musicians use these different patterns to make many kinds of songs.
