Chromatic scale

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Music is made of many different sounds. A chromatic scale is a set of twelve notes. These notes live within one octave. Each note is a tiny step from the next. We call this small step a semitone.

A piano is a chromatic instrument. This means it can play all twelve notes. Other tools can play them too. A violin can slide between notes. This lets it play microtones. Microtones are sounds even smaller than a semitone.

Most music today uses a special way to tune notes. This is called 12-tone equal temperament. It makes the twelve notes have the same size. This helps music sound good in every key.

Long ago, people used different ways to tune. One way is called Pythagorean tuning. In this way, the twelve notes are not all the same size. This makes the scale look uneven. Some notes are a little higher or lower. People also use these twelve notes to build other scales. They are like building blocks for music.
