The eight musical modes

This often happens because of a mode. A mode is a special type of musical scale. It is a set of notes played in a certain order. But a mode is more than just notes. It also includes a specific way to play a melody.

This makes the music have its own unique character.

In Western music, we often talk about major and minor keys. These are types of modes. Some people use modes to make music sound like folk songs. Others use them to create a religious feeling. Long ago, people used eight church modes. These were used in Gregorian chant, which is a type of old singing.

Ancient Greek music also used modes. They had different names for them, like Dorian or Phrygian. These names came from different groups of people in Greece. Some thinkers, like Plato, believed music could change a person's character. They thought certain modes could make soldiers brave. Other modes might make them feel soft. Today, many cultures use their own kinds of modes to make beautiful music.
