Many people believe Pope Gregory I invented these songs. They say a dove spoke the music to him. Scholars think he was actually a great organizer. He gathered different songs from many places. He made them into one large group. This helped the music spread across Europe.

In the past, many different styles of chant existed. Some were in Spain or Italy. Over time, Gregorian chant became the main style. It was spread by leaders like Charlemagne. Today, the Roman Catholic Church still uses it. It is a very old and important way to pray through song.
