These lines are called wales. They make a pattern of diagonal ribs. This kind of cloth is made using a twill weave.

To make it, threads cross in a special way. A weft thread goes over some threads and under others. Each row has a small step or offset. This step creates the diagonal lines.

This weave needs a machine called a loom. It uses three or more harnesses to move the threads.

Twill is a very useful type of fabric. It is strong and lasts a long time. This makes it good for work clothes. Denim is a famous type of twill.

It is also good for bags and jackets.

This cloth feels soft and moves well. It drapes nicely over things. It also hides dirt and stains well. It is better than plain cloth at resisting wrinkles. Some twills show more warp threads on top. Others show more weft threads on top. Some even show the same amount on both sides. Examples include herringbone and denim.
