Have you ever noticed diagonal lines on your favorite clothes?

These lines are called wales. They form a pattern of parallel ribs. This pattern comes from a special way of making cloth called a twill weave. It is one of three main types of weave. The others are plain weave and satin. People love twill because it is strong and looks great. It is a very useful way to turn threads into fabric.

Making a twill weave follows a specific pattern. A weft thread travels over one or more warp threads. Then, it goes under two or more warp threads. This repeats in a steady way. Each row has a small step or offset. This step is what creates the diagonal lines.

In weaving, a float is a part of a thread that crosses many others. To make this, a loom needs three or more harnesses. We often use fractions to describe the weave. A fraction like 2/1 means two threads go up and one goes down.

There are many ways to group different twills. You can look at how the threads step. You can also look at the direction of the lines. These lines can go left-hand, which is called S-twill. They can also go right-hand, which is called Z-twill. Some twills show more warp threads on the front. These are called warp-faced twills. Others show more weft threads on the front. These are called weft-faced twills. Some even show the same amount on both sides. These are called even-sided twills.

Different twills have very different names and uses. Even-sided twills include patterns like herringbone and houndstooth. They also include fabrics like serge and sharkskin. Warp-faced twills include many things you might wear. You might wear denim, chino, or gabardine. Other types include cavalry twill and drill. These fabrics are often used for things that need to last. Twill is also used for sturdy upholstery.

This makes it great for heavy-duty items.

Twills are special because of how they feel and move. They drape well, which means they hang nicely. This happens because the threads can move more freely. Because of this, twill is often softer than plain weave. It is also very good at resisting wrinkles. If you crease it, it recovers well. Twill is also good at hiding dirt and stains. This is why it is used for work clothes and jackets. It can even be used for backpacks and draperies.
