Weaving is a way to turn thread into cloth. To make fabric, you need two main parts. These parts are called the warp and the weft.

The warp is the set of yarns stretched on a loom. A loom is a frame that holds these threads. The warp threads must be very strong. This is because they are held under high tension. Tension is the tight pull on the threads.

Making cloth happens in a specific way. First, the weaver sets the warp threads in place. These threads run lengthwise through the fabric. Next, the weft thread is drawn through them. The weft goes over and under each warp thread.

This weft thread is also called a pick. Sometimes people call the weft the woof. The weft does not need to be as strong as the warp. This is because it does not stay stretched tight.

People have used different tools to weave for a long time. Long ago, weavers used handlooms and a tool called a shuttle. In 1733, John Kay invented the flying shuttle. This helped make weaving faster. Later, the Industrial Revolution changed how cloth was made. Edmund Cartwright patented a mechanized power loom in 1785. This machine could make sixty picks every minute.

Many different materials can be used for weaving. Traditionally, people used natural fibers like wool, linen, silk, or alpaca. The warp needs to be made of spun and plied fiber to stay strong. During the Industrial Revolution, new ways to spin made cotton yarn stronger. Now, we also use synthetic fibers like nylon, rayon, or polyester. Some cultures, like the ancient Incas, used backstrap weaving. This method uses the weight of the weaver's body to control the tension.

We can see how these ideas connect to our world today. The words warp and weft are used as metaphors. This means people use them to describe the basic structure of something. For example, someone might call a student's life a "warp and weft." It means the many parts that make up that life. You can also find these terms in computing. In that world, a warp is a block of parallel threads. It is a way to describe how a computer works.
