A spinning wheel is a clever tool used to make yarn.

This device turns loose fibers into long, strong threads. Before the Industrial Revolution, these wheels were very important for making cloth. They helped people create the materials used for clothing and blankets. The spinning wheel actually helped lead to much larger machines later on. These newer machines, like the spinning jenny, eventually replaced the simple wheel.

To make yarn, you must first prepare the fibers. You usually comb or card them to remove dirt or plant stalks. The way the wheel works is quite interesting. First, you take a clump of fibers and tease a little bit out. Then, you twist those fibers into a basic string shape. The wheel automates this twisting process so you do not have to do it by hand. This allows you to control how thick the thread is as you pull it.

People have been spinning for thousands of years. Long ago, they used a simple stick called a spindle. This was a very slow and lengthy process. The history of the spinning wheel is still debated by experts. Some think it began in China during the Zhou dynasty. Others believe it was invented in India or the Middle-East. There is an early drawing of a wheel from Baghdad dated to 1237.

You turn this wheel with your hand while holding fibers in your other hand. Another type is the charkha, which is a small wheel from Asia. The charkha was a very important symbol for India's independence movement.

Some wheels use a treadle, which is a foot pedal. Using a foot pedal lets a person use both hands to work the fibers. This makes the spinning much faster and more efficient.

Spinning wheels connect us to how people lived in the past. Before big factories, most things were made by hand at home. In the 1700s, it took five spinners to supply just one weaver. Later, inventors like Richard Arkwright used waterwheels to power machines. These inventions changed the world by making cloth much easier to produce. Today, we can still see different types of wheels in museums and homes.
