A distaff is a very helpful tool used for spinning. It is designed to hold unspun fibers in one place. This keeps the fibers from getting tangled and messy. Keeping them neat makes the spinning process much easier for the person.

Most people use a distaff to hold flax or wool. You can use it for almost any type of fiber. The name comes from the Low German word "dis," which means a bunch of flax.

To use a distaff, you must first "dress" it. Dressing is the way you wrap the fiber around the tool. You lay the flax fibers down so they are side by side. They should be parallel to the distaff and each other. Then, you carefully roll the fibers onto the tool.

Finally, you tie a piece of ribbon or string at the top. You wrap it loosely to keep the fibers in place. This ensures the fiber stays ready for spinning.

There are many different shapes for this tool. The oldest form is a long staff. A person holds this staff under their left arm. They use their right hand to draw fibers from it.

Another version can be attached to a spinning wheel. This version is shorter and sits next to the bobbin. In Russia, people used a special L-shaped distaff. It had a horizontal board called a "dontse." The vertical part was often carved and painted as folk art.

Some people even use a wrist distaff today. These are made of flexible materials like braided yarn. The distaff has a loop that hangs from your wrist. It often has a tassel with beads on the ends. You wrap the fiber through the loop to prevent snags.

This modern tool helps handspinners keep their work close. It is a simple way to manage long strands of fiber.

The word "distaff" is also used to describe people. It is an adjective for the female side of a family. This comes from the tool being linked to domestic life. In horse racing, "distaff races" are for female horses. For example, the Breeders' Cup Distaff is a major race.

This name was used from 1984 until 2007. It changed to the Ladies' Classic for a few years. However, the name changed back to the Distaff in 2013.
