A shuttle is a very helpful tool for weaving. Weaving is the way people make cloth.

To make cloth, you need a machine called a loom. The shuttle helps you carry thread across the loom. It holds the weft yarn very neatly. This yarn is the thread that goes sideways. Without a shuttle, weaving would be much harder.

Here is how the shuttle works during weaving. First, the loom creates a gap called a shed. This shed is the space between the long warp threads.

Next, you throw or pass the shuttle through that gap. The shuttle carries the weft yarn through the shed. This action weaves the thread into the fabric. It moves back and forth to build the cloth. Each pass adds one more line of thread.

There are different kinds of shuttles you might see. The simplest type is called a stick shuttle.

A stick shuttle is just a flat, narrow piece of wood. It has small notches on both ends. These notches hold the weft yarn in place. Other shuttles are more complicated than a simple stick. These use a bobbin or a pirn to hold thread. A bobbin is a small part that carries the yarn.

Different places use different woods to make these tools. In the United States, makers often use flowering dogwood.

This wood is very hard and strong. It does not splinter easily when you use it. You can also polish it to a very smooth finish. In the United Kingdom, makers choose different types of wood. They often use boxwood, cornel, or persimmon. These woods are also good for making shuttles.

Think about how a needle works with thread. A shuttle acts a bit like a large sewing needle.

It carries the thread through a specific path. The path is the shed in the loom. Just as a needle pulls thread through cloth, the shuttle carries yarn through the warp. It keeps everything compact and tidy. This makes the cloth look very neat. It is a smart way to work with yarn.
