The spinning frame was a huge invention from the Industrial Revolution. It was a machine used to make yarn or thread. People used fibers like cotton or wool to make it. Before this machine, people spun thread by hand at home. They used a spinning wheel for this slow work. This was called a cottage industry. But soon, cloth was being made much faster. This created a great need for more yarn.

This machine works in a very clever way. It uses parts called draw rollers to stretch the yarn. The process starts with a thick bundle of loose fibers. This bundle is called a roving. The roving moves between three pairs of rollers. Each pair of rollers spins slightly faster than the one before it. This makes the roving thin and long. Then, a bobbin-and-flyer part adds a twist to make it strong.

Many people helped develop this new machine. Richard Arkwright and John Kay worked together on it. Kay had also worked with an inventor named Thomas Highs. Other local craftsmen like Peter Atherton helped the team too. The machine used ideas from Lewis Paul, who invented draw rollers. This machine made much stronger thread than the spinning jenny. The spinning jenny was an earlier machine made by James Hargreaves.

Because the machine was so big, it needed power. Arkwright tried using horses to move it first. He later decided to use a water wheel instead. This is why people called it a water frame. The machine was patented in 1769. In France, Philippe Henri de Girard also made spinning frames. He patented his ideas for spinning flax in both wet and dry ways. His work was later patented in England in 1815.

These machines changed how the whole world made cloth. The spinning frame made yarn very quickly. By the year 1830, the old way of spinning at home could not compete. Most spinning moved into large factories instead. The strong yarn from these frames was used for the lengthwise threads in cloth. This is called the warp. Weaker yarn from hand machines was used for the filler threads. This part is called the weft.
