James Hargreaves was a clever inventor from England. He lived and worked in Lancashire during the 1700s. He was a weaver and a carpenter.

He was a large man, about five feet ten inches tall. Most of his life was spent working as a hand loom weaver. He also had a very large family. Records show he had 13 children. His invention changed how people made cloth. This was a big part of the Industrial Revolution.

His big idea came from a simple accident. A one-thread spinning wheel fell onto the floor. Hargreaves saw the wheel and the spindle keep spinning.

He thought about putting many spindles side by side. This way, one person could spin many threads at once. He built a machine called the spinning jenny. It made cotton weft threads. Weft is the thread that goes across the cloth. The machine could not make strong warp threads. Warp is the thread that runs long ways in cloth.

History tells us how his invention spread. Hargreaves built a machine for himself first. Then he sold some to his neighbors. Some spinners were unhappy because yarn prices fell. This led Hargreaves to move to Nottingham. In Nottingham, he made machines for a man named Shipley. On June 12, 1770, he was granted a patent. A patent is a legal right to an invention. He also ran a small mill in Hockley. He worked there with a partner named Thomas James.

Many important people helped change spinning forever. Hargreaves was one of three main men. Richard Arkwright patented the water frame in 1769. Samuel Crompton made the spinning mule in 1779. Crompton said he learned to spin on a jenny. He used one built by Hargreaves in 1769. There was even a big legal battle in the 1780s. People argued about who truly invented these machines. Some people even claimed Thomas Highs was the inventor. Hargreaves died in 1778. His wife received a payment of £400 after he died.

There are many stories about the name "jenny." Some books say it was named after his daughter. But his wife and daughters did not have that name. In Lancashire, "jenny" was just a slang word for an engine.

It was a common way to talk about machines. His work helped lead to the big machines we see today. It connects his old wooden tools to modern factories. We can see his impact in how we make clothes now.
