James Hargreaves was an inventor from England. He lived in the 1700s. He worked as a weaver and a carpenter.

One day, a spinning wheel fell over on the floor. Hargreaves saw the wheel and the spindle keep turning. This gave him a big idea. He thought he could put many spindles side by side. This would let one person spin many threads at once. He built a machine to do this. We call this machine the spinning jenny.

The name "jenny" was slang for an engine. It was not named after a person.

His machine made cotton weft thread. Weft is the thread that goes across cloth. The machine could not make the strong warp thread. Warp is the thread that runs long ways in cloth. Other men later made machines for that part.

Hargreaves sold his machines to neighbors. This caused some people to be upset. The price of yarn went down. Because of this, Hargreaves moved to Nottingham. He lived there until he died in 1778.
