A spinning mule is a machine that makes yarn.

It turns soft fibers like cotton or wool into strong thread. Samuel Crompton invented the first mule around 1779. He named it a mule because it mixed ideas from two other machines.

One machine was the spinning jenny. The other was the water frame. By combining them, he made a better tool.

The machine works in a set of steps. First, a part called a carriage moves forward. It pulls the soft fluff through rollers. These rollers spin at different speeds. This makes the fluff thin and long. As the carriage moves, the machine twists the fluff into yarn.

Next, the carriage moves back. This is called the return trip. On this trip, the machine wraps the new yarn onto a spindle. This makes a cone shape called a cop.

In the past, many people worked in mills to run these machines. Some mules were very big. They could be 150 feet long. They could hold up to 1,320 spindles at once.

Even today, people make and use versions of this machine. They use them to spin very soft wool from animals like alpacas.
