A spinning mule is a big machine.

It turns soft fluff into yarn. This yarn makes clothes for you.

Samuel Crompton made the first one. It was made of wood. It used parts from other machines. This is why it is called a mule.

The machine moves back and forth. It pulls the fluff through rollers. This makes the thread thin. Then it twists the thread.

On the way back, the machine winds the yarn. It wraps the yarn onto a spindle. This makes a cone shape.

People still use these machines today. They spin soft wool and alpaca. It is a very old but useful idea.
