Satin is a type of shiny cloth.

It has a very smooth top. The back side is often dull. This happens because of how the threads are woven. In this weave, many threads float over others. They skip over several threads before going under one. These long floats help light bounce off the surface. This makes the fabric look very bright and glossy.

Satin began in China. Long ago, it was made only from silk. The name comes from a Chinese port city called Quanzhou.

Merchants carried this silk to many places. Today, we make satin with silk or nylon. If it is made with cotton, we call it sateen.

People use satin for many things. It is great for fancy evening gowns. It feels soft for bed sheets and pillows. Some people even use it for ballet shoes. You can find it on neckties and shirts too. It is also used to cover furniture. Satin is very flexible. This helps it drape nicely over shapes.
