Plain weave

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Making cloth is a very old skill. One way to make it is plain weave. This is a simple way to cross strings. You use two sets of strings to do this. One set goes up and down. We call these the warp strings. The other set goes side to side. We call these the weft strings.

The strings follow a steady pattern. One weft string goes over a warp string. The next one goes under it. This pattern repeats for every row. It is the simplest way to weave. This way makes a very strong cloth. It is also very stable. This means it does not change shape easily.

You can find plain weave in many things. It is used to make many kinds of fabric. Many clothes use this style of weave. It is a basic part of making cloth. People have used this method for a long time. It helps make the cloth we wear every day.
