Making textiles is a very old art. People used animal skins for clothes a long time ago. Later, they learned to weave plant fibres.

To make a textile, you start with fibres. People twist fibres into long strands called yarn.

Then, they use yarn to make fabric. They can weave, knit, or braid the yarn. Some people use a machine called a loom to weave.

There are two main groups of textiles. Consumer textiles are for our daily lives. We use them for clothes, towels, and rugs. These focus on being soft and pretty. Technical textiles are for special jobs. They must be very strong or safe. They are used for medical gowns, spacesuits, and even bulletproof jackets.
