Knitting is a way to make fabric using yarn.

You can do this by hand or with a machine. When you knit by hand, you usually use two needles. These needles hold loops of yarn. As you work, you pull new loops through old ones. This creates rows of connected loops.

These loops make the fabric very stretchy. Because it stretches so well, people use it for socks.

Knitting has a very long history. It likely grew from an old craft called nålbinding. Nålbinding is a way to make fabric using knots and a single needle. The earliest known examples of knitting are cotton socks. These were found in a city called Fustat.

Long ago, people in Europe formed guilds to make knit goods. In 1589, William Lee invented a knitting frame. This was an early machine. It helped make fabric much faster than using hands alone. Today, people knit for fun or to make clothes. You can use different colors and thick yarns to make many things.
