Knitting is a special way to make fabric.

You use yarn to create many interconnected loops. People can do this by hand or with a machine. When you knit by hand, you usually use two needles. These needles can be straight or shaped like tubes.

The loops on the needle are called active stitches. As you work, you pull new loops through old ones. This creates rows of connected loops that intermesh together. This method makes the fabric very stretchy. In fact, some knitted garments can stretch as much as 500 percent!

Because it stretches so well, it is great for things like socks.

There are two main ways to knit. The first is called weft knitting. This is the most common kind. You can do this by hand or by machine. In weft knitting, you use one yarn to make the whole fabric. You can even use different colors to make patterns.

One way to do this is called intarsia. This is when you use separate yarns for different colors, like a red apple on green grass. Another way is called stranded colorwork. This is seen in Fair Isle sweaters. The second way is warp knitting. This is usually done by machines. It uses a different yarn for every vertical column.

This kind of fabric is often used for lingerie.

Knitting has a very long and interesting history. It likely grew from an ancient craft called nålbinding.

Nålbinding uses a single needle to make knots and loops. We have found artifacts of this craft in Egypt and China. These date as far back as 4200 B.C.E. The earliest known examples of real knitting are cotton socks. These were found in the city of Fustat, which is now part of Cairo. In the 1400s, knitting guilds appeared in Western Europe. These were groups of workers in places like Tournai and Barcelona.

By the 1500s, people were even making specialized knit caps and stockings.

A big change happened in 1589. A man named William Lee invented the first knitting frame.

This was an early type of knitting machine. He wanted to make stockings faster. He even asked Queen Elizabeth I for a patent. She said no because people feared it would take jobs from hand knitters. William Lee moved to France to find more help. He died in Paris in 1614. Later, his brother and an apprentice tried to get a patent in England. By 1620, using a machine to knit was a common way to make clothes.

Hand knitting then became a fun hobby for many people.

Knitting is different from other crafts like weaving or crochet. In weaving, threads run straight and parallel.

Knitting yarn follows a curvy, meandering path. This path creates the loops that make the fabric elastic. Crochet is also different because it uses a single hook. A crochet maker finishes one stitch before starting the next. Knitting uses two needles to hold many stitches at once.

If you make a mistake and a loop falls off, it is called unravelling. Some knitters call this "frogging." This is a funny joke because it sounds like a frog croaking! Whether for work or for fun, knitting is a skill that connects us to the past.
