A knit cap is a piece of headwear made from knitted yarn.

These hats are designed to keep people warm in cold weather. Most caps have a simple shape that gets narrower at the top. The stretchy nature of the knitting helps the cap hug the head tightly. This design keeps the hat secure so it does not fall off. Some people like to add a fuzzy pom-pom or loose tassels to the top.

Other styles might have a folded brim or even ear flaps. In the Andes Mountains, some caps include flaps and strings to tie under the chin.

There are many different ways to make and wear these hats. A special type called a balaclava folds down over the whole head. It only leaves small openings for the eyes or the mouth. Some modern hats are made as a long, straight tube. You can wear these as a neck-warmer by leaving the end open. If you pull a drawstring tight, it becomes a hat.

In the past, makers used a process called felting to make caps weatherproof. This process actually made the wool hats smaller in size.

Knit caps have a very long history in many different lands. The earliest type of knitted wool cap appeared in the 15th century. These were made in the Welsh town of Monmouth.

The only surviving Monmouth cap is kept in the Monmouth Museum. It was made using coarse, two-ply wool. Makers would knit in a round shape starting from the bottom edge. They would then finish the top with a rounded crown. In Scandinavia, caps with pom-poms have been used since the Viking Age.

People all over the world use different names for these hats.

In Canada, the toque is a symbol of national identity. In Scandinavia, certain caps are still part of traditional folk costumes. Even fashion changes how we see them. A bobble hat was once seen as plain workwear, but it later became a luxury item. Whether for work or style, people still love them today.
