Some yarn comes from plants. Cotton is a very common plant fiber. You can also make yarn from flax to create linen. Other plants like hemp and bamboo work too.

Other yarn comes from animals. Most wool comes from sheep. People breed sheep to grow longer fibers. This makes better yarn. You can also find yarn from alpacas or even silk from moths.

Some yarn is synthetic. This means it is man-made. It is made from materials like nylon or polyester.

Making yarn often involves spinning. Spinning is a way to twist fibers together. This twist holds them in a long line. Some yarn has a special twist called S-twist or Z-twist.
