Yarn

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yarn is a long, continuous length of interlocked fibers used to create a vast array of textiles.

It serves as the fundamental building block for sewing, knitting, crocheting, weaving, and embroidery. People also use it for ropemaking and general textile production. While often used interchangeably, thread is actually a specific type of yarn designed for sewing by hand or machine. To handle the high stresses of sewing, modern manufactured threads are sometimes finished with wax or other lubricants.

The mechanical integrity of yarn relies on frictional contacts between its composing fibers. This scientific principle was first studied by Galileo. Most yarn is produced through a process called spinning, which involves twisting individual fibers or filaments together. This creates a cohesive, continuous assembly known as a "single." To create thicker yarn, these strands are twisted together again in a process called plying. These grouped strands are known as plies. The direction of the twist is vital for the fabric's properties.

An S-twist appears to go up to the left, while a Z-twist goes to the right.

There are several distinct types of yarn categorized by their production methods. Combed yarn undergoes an extra step called combing, which aligns fibers and removes short pieces. This results in a smoother, softer, and higher-quality fabric. In contrast, carded yarn is slightly less expensive. Hosiery yarns are specifically made for knitted fabrics using a process called melt spinning. Because knitted materials are delicate, hosiery yarns are made softer with fewer twists per inch.

Open-end yarn is produced using a rotor instead of a spindle, allowing for the use of short fibers.

Finally, novelty yarns, such as slub yarns, feature deliberate unevenness or added metallic fibers for special visual effects.

Humanity has been producing yarn since the Stone Age.

Early materials included animal hides, reeds, cotton, wool, and silk. The textile trade became a massive contributor to the ancient global economy. Silk production is a notable historical example, beginning in China. By the Shang dynasty, between 1600 and 1050 BCE, silk thread and cloth manufacture were well-established. The Industrial Revolution later transformed the field through inventions like the Spinning Jenny.

This machine helped move yarn production from small-scale work into large factories.

Yarn materials are divided into natural, synthetic, and recycled categories. Natural plant fibers include cotton, which is common for mechanical weaving, and linen, which comes from the flax plant. Other plant sources include bamboo, hemp, maize, nettle, and soy.

Animal fibers are also widely used. Wool from sheep is the most common, and sheep are often bred to produce longer fibers for better quality. Other animal sources include alpaca, cashmere, and silk, which is a protein fiber produced by the larvae of the moth *Bombyx mori*.

Synthetic fibers, such as nylon, acrylic, rayon, and polyester, are created through different methods. These fibers are generally extruded in continuous strands of gel-state materials. These strands are then drawn, annealed, and cured to achieve specific properties. Synthetic fibers exist in three forms: staple (cut fibers up to 120 mm), tow (a continuous rope of many filaments), and filament (a continuous strand).

Additionally, T-shirt yarn is a recycled, eco-friendly option made from the leftover fabric of clothing manufacture.

Understanding material properties helps people choose the right yarn for a task. Natural fibers may require careful handling because they can shrink, stain, or be eaten by moths. Some protein yarns might cause skin sensitivity, though studies show that modern, superfine Merino wool is well-tolerated. You can often identify fiber types by burning them; hair-type fibers smell like burnt hair, while cotton burns like a wick.

Finally, many modern textiles use blends. Combining natural fibers with synthetics allows makers to inherit the best traits of both, such as the warmth of wool paired with the durability and machine-washability of polyester.
