Crochet is a textile process used to create fabric by interlocking loops of yarn or thread.

This craft relies on a specialized tool called a crochet hook. The term itself comes from the French word for "hook." While many people associate crochet with making warm clothing, it is also used for delicate lace and artistic structures.

It remains a popular way for people to express their creativity and identity through handmade goods.

The mechanism of crochet involves a specific sequence of movements with the hook. A maker uses the hook to pull a strand of material through an existing loop to create a new one. In standard crochet, each stitch is completed before the next one begins. This differs from knitting, where many stitches often remain open on the needles at once. However, certain variations like Tunisian crochet or Broomstick lace do keep multiple stitches open simultaneously.

The shape of the hook affects the work, as tapered hooks are often used for specific stitches like slip-stitch crochet.

There are several distinct types of crochet tools and styles. Hooks can be manufactured from aluminum, steel, metal, wood, bamboo, or even bone. They come in various shapes, including in-line, tapered, and ergonomic designs.

Historically, the shepherd's hook featured a strong taper to assist with slip-stitch crochet. In contrast, modern inline hooks often feature a cylindrical shaft. Styles of crochet also vary by technique, such as simple open crochet, which creates a mesh of chain-stitch arches. Other styles include double-crochet, which creates a denser fabric, or the elaborate textures found in Irish crochet lace.

The exact origins of crochet are still a subject of historical debate. One theory suggests it traveled along Arab trade routes from Arabia to Tibet and Spain. A second theory places its beginnings in South America, where it was used in tribal puberty rituals. A third theory points to China, noting early examples of crochet dolls.

While knitted textiles date back to the 11th century, substantive evidence of crochet in Europe emerged in the 19th century. The first published instructions using the specific term "crochet" appeared in the Dutch magazine Penélopé in 1823. This publication included color plates showing various silk thread purses.

Crochet has played a significant role in social history, particularly in Ireland. During the Great Irish Famine from 1845 to 1849, crochet lace work became a vital form of famine relief.

Men, women, and children formed cooperatives to produce lace and earn money for survival. Schools were established to teach the craft, and teachers were sent across Ireland to spread the skill. Mademoiselle Riego de la Branchardiere published the first book of Irish crochet patterns in 1846. This helped the style gain massive popularity in Europe and America until the First World War.

Fashion trends have caused crochet styles to shift through different eras. During the Victorian era, crochet often featured bright colors for fancy purses. By the Edwardian era, between 1910 and 1920, lace became more elaborate in texture and complexity.

After World War II, a resurgence of interest occurred in the United States. From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, people made colorful doilies and potholders using thicker, variegated yarns. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the "granny square" motif became a popular symbol of the era.

Today, crochet connects traditional handcraft with modern digital technology. While it was once primarily viewed as a homemaker's art, it is now a medium for self-expression. People use YouTube tutorials and TikTok videos to learn new techniques.

The craft has even been used to explore complex mathematical concepts, such as creating hyperbolic planes. Whether used for practical items like cat clothing or high-art installations, crochet continues to evolve as a global practice.
