Spinning (polymers)

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Spinning is a way to make long threads called fibers. These fibers are made from polymers. A polymer is a type of material used to make many things. One way to make them is melt spinning. In this way, the polymer is melted into a liquid. The liquid goes through a spinneret. A spinneret is a tool with many tiny holes. This lets out many thin threads at once. Then, cooling makes the threads hard. This makes nylon and polyester.

Other ways use a liquid called a solvent. The polymer is dissolved in the solvent to make a solution. In dry spinning, hot air hits the liquid. This dries the solvent and makes the thread. In wet spinning, the liquid goes into a bath. This bath makes the polymer turn into a solid fiber. This way makes spandex and rayon.

There is also electrospinning. This uses an electrical charge to pull very fine threads. These threads can be tiny. Finally, the fibers are often drawn. Drawing means pulling the fibers to make them strong. This helps the fibers keep their shape.
