Spinning (polymers)

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Spinning is a way to make long, continuous threads called polymer fibers. These fibers are used to make many things we use every day. The process is a special kind of extrusion. Extrusion means pushing a material through a tool to change its shape. This tool is called a spinneret. A spinneret has many tiny holes. These holes let out many thin threads at the same time.

One way to make fibers is called melt spinning. This works if the polymer is a thermoplastic. A thermoplastic is a material that melts when heated. First, the polymer is melted into a liquid. This liquid is pushed through the spinneret holes. Then, the threads become solid by cooling down. This method is used to make nylon and polyester. It is also used for olefin, saran, and sulfar.

Sometimes, melting the polymer is too hot. If the heat breaks the material, we use solution spinning. In this way, the polymer is dissolved in a liquid called a solvent. This creates a spinning solution, which people sometimes call a dope. One way is dry spinning. In dry spinning, hot air hits the liquid. This evaporates the solvent and leaves a solid thread. Another way is wet spinning. This is the oldest of the five ways. The liquid goes into a bath to become a solid. This makes spandex, rayon, acrylic, and aramid.

There are even more special ways to spin. Gel spinning uses temperature to make a gel. This makes very strong fibers like Spectra. Another way is electrospinning. This uses an electrical charge to pull very fine threads. These threads can be on a micro or nano scale. This means they are incredibly tiny. This method is great for large and complex molecules. It does not need high heat or special chemistry.

After the threads are made, they often go through a last step. This step is called drawing. Drawing means pulling the fibers to make them stronger. This can happen while the polymer is still cooling. It can also happen after it is completely solid. Drawing helps the fibers keep their shape and strength. This is how we get the high-quality threads used in many products.
