Polymer chemistry is a special branch of science. It focuses on the structure and properties of polymers. These are huge molecules called macromolecules.

Many things in our world are made of these chains. This includes metals and ceramics from the Earth. It also includes the DNA inside living things. Most polymer chemistry looks at organic and synthetic materials. You can find synthetic polymers in many everyday products. They are used to make plastics and rubbers.

How do these long chains form? It all starts with a tiny building block. This single molecule is called a monomer.

Scientists use a thing called polymerization to join them. They can add more monomers to change how the polymer works. This can change how strong or durable it is. Adding monomers can change its mechanical properties too. Long chains also change how a liquid flows. This thickness is called viscosity.

As the chains get longer, the viscosity usually goes up.

For a long time, scientists were confused about polymers. They thought polymers were just small clusters of molecules. They believed an unknown force held these clusters together. Then, a chemist named Hermann Staudinger changed everything. He proposed that polymers were long chains of atoms. These atoms are held together by covalent bonds.

He called these long chains macromolecules. Staudinger won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1953. His work helped scientists invent many new materials.

Many famous discoveries happened in polymer chemistry. In 1907, Leo Baekeland made Bakelite. This was the first polymer made without using living things. In 1931, Wallace Carothers made neoprene, a synthetic rubber. He also invented nylon in 1935 to replace silk. Later, Stephanie Kwolek developed Kevlar in 1966.

In 2000, three scientists won a Nobel Prize for conductive polymers. These are special polymers that can carry electricity. They help make things like OLED screens work.

We can group polymers into different families. Biopolymers come from living things. They make up proteins and sugars like starch. DNA and RNA are also biopolymers.

Synthetic polymers are made by people. Most of these come from petrochemicals like oil. Some synthetic polymers are called thermoplastics. These include things like polyethylene and polyester. Others are called thermoset plastics. This group includes vulcanized rubber and Kevlar. Knowing these groups helps us understand the world around us.
